Same core material, different construction
Both monolithic and layered zirconia crowns use zirconium oxide, but how they're built is genuinely different, and that difference is what drives most of the practical trade-offs between them.
Layered zirconia
A layered crown has a zirconia core for strength, topped with a separate layer of porcelain to achieve a more lifelike, translucent appearance — since older, more opaque zirconia didn't look as natural on its own. The porcelain layer, however, can chip or delaminate from the core over time, particularly under heavy biting force.
Monolithic zirconia
A monolithic crown is milled entirely from a single block of zirconia, with no separate porcelain layer. Modern multi-layered zirconia blocks are shaded to vary in translucency from the gum line to the biting edge, closing much of the old aesthetic gap without adding a separate, chip-prone porcelain layer.
Where each is typically used
Monolithic zirconia is generally preferred for back teeth (molars), where chewing force is highest and any chipping risk matters most. Layered zirconia is still sometimes chosen for front teeth in cases where the absolute best possible translucency is the priority, and the lower biting force reduces the practical risk of chipping.
The bottom line
