A gingivectomy removes and reshapes excess or uneven gum tissue, most often to correct a "gummy smile" where too much gum shows when you smile, or to remove tissue that's difficult to keep clean and prone to inflammation. It can be done on its own or as a preparation step before veneers or crowns.
